GOODSWAIN: A family of this name was connected with the Abbey of Dunfermline in the fifteenth century. Andrew Gudswan was a charter witness apud Dunfermlyn in 1412 (RD., p. 280). John Gudeswane, notary public in St. Andrews diocese in 1422 (Cambus., 103) is probably the John Gudswan, notary public apud Dunfermelyn, who witnessed a charter of the lands of Halis near Edinburgh in 1438 (RD., 409). Andrew Gudsuane was a charter witness in Dunfermline in 1456 (ibid., 448), James Gudswan was 'ourman' in Dunfermline in 1491, vicar of Cambee, and later dean of Fife (DBR., 34), and Schir Jhone Gudswayne was chaplain in Dunfermline in 1507 (RD., p. 361). Gudsuan 1492, Gudesvane 1504. The name may be for 'good swain,' i.e. good servant.
