Halliwell says, 'Gore, a small narrow slip of ground' (quoting Kennett, Gloss). Evidently a gore was a piece of land in shape of the gore of a garment; v. Skeat, Gore (a). (English) One who lived near, or on, the triangular piece of land; one who tilled such a piece; one who came from Gore (triangular land), in Kent.

Same as Gower, Goar, Gover; from Gûyr (Grower), in Wales, signifying "sloping." Archd. Williams translates gover a small stream, and the W. gower is a croft, close; and gofwr, govwr, a strong mound or tower. Verstegan says the name Gower is derived from a kind of cake formerly made for children!

The name Gore is armorially identified with ‘Goare,’ and 'Goare ’ with ‘Gower.’ One branch of the latter family bore a fesse, which seems to be the original form of the Gore arms. The Gowers of Warwick and Worcester bore the same arms as the Earls of Arran, merely doubling the number of crosslets (Robson). It is clear, therefore, that the Gores are Gowers of the Warwickshire line, of which Hugh de Goher held a knight’s fee from the Earl of Warwick in 1165 (Liber Niger). From this line derived the Gores, Earls of Arran and Ross, and the Baronets Gore.
