This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Goring,' parishes in the Dioceses of Chichester and Oxford. Mr. Lower, writing of a county with which he was so familiar, says, 'Gorringe and Gorring, both Sussex surnames, and doubtless modifications of the ancient local name Goring in that county. As in the case of Hardinge, the 'g' in the latter of these two forms has been improperly softened, and the pronunciation is Gorrinje' (Patronymica Britannica).

Or Bygod. Hugh Bygod was Lord of Garringes or Goring, Sussex, 13th cent. (Testa de Neville). He was executor of the will of the Countess of Norfolk, 1248 (Roberts, Excerpt. ii. 33). John de Garringes, his son, had a dau. and heir, who m. Henry Tregoz, M.P. for Sussex 1309 (Parliamentary Writs). The bailsman of Henry T. was John Goring, probably nephew of John de Goring or Garringes (Ib.). From the latter descended the family of De Goring, afterwards Lords Goring, Earls of Norwich, so distinguished in the Civil Wars 17th cent., and the Baronets Goring. This family appears to be a younger branch of the Bygods Earls of Norfolk.
