From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Curtailed from Macgorrie, which see. Eleven persons of this name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, mainly in the parish of Foulis. The Gorries of Perthshire are said to be descended from some Macgorries who settled about four hundred years ago in the neighborhood of Logie Almond. Andrew Gorry in parish of Caterlinge, 1631 (Brechin). William, son of Donald Gorrie in Logiealmond, and others were charged with hamesucken in 1637 (RPC., 2. ser. VI p. 463). William Gorrie in Culnaclich, tenant of the earl of Tullibardine, was cherged in 1642 with the wrongful imprisonment of John McAgo (ibid., 2. ser. VII, p. 298). Thomas Gorrie was captain of the watch at Logiealmond in 1682 (ibid., 3. ser. VII, p. 638). This "Watch" or company was probably the earliest formed on the Highland border; the Black Watch companies were not raised until 1725. The AFM. state under 835 that "Goffraidh, son of Fergus, chief of Oriel, went over to Alba to strengthen the Dalriada at the request of Cinaedh Mac Alpinn," a very early instance of the adoption of Scandinavian names by the Irish, and indicative of intermarriage. Gofraid 989 (Tighernch), Gothbrith 917 (AU.), Goithbrith 920 (AU.), etc. The name answers to ON. Gudfrodr, a more ancient form of Gudrodr. It became a common name in the royal race of the Isle of Man, and in later Manx ballads is corrupted into Orree. As forename: Gorre McDonilI VcGorre, 1582 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 135).
