From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the old barony of Gorthie in Perthshire. The founder of this family appears to have been Tristrann or Tristram who witnessed Earl Gilbert's foundation charter of Inchaffray c. 1200. He later granted to Inchaffray a croft in Edardoennech near the pond of the mill of Gortin, c. 1208. His sons, Henry and Tristram, appear as witnesses in later charters in the same chartulary (Inchaffray., p. 8, 24, 31, 34, 38, 39, etc.). Another Tristram de Gorty witnessed a charter by Bricius de Ardrossane in favor of the same monastery in 1271 (LIM., p. 22). A later Tristram de Gorty appears in 1365, and a still later Tristram of Gorti or Gorty, who witnessed Atholl charters in 1428 and 1430, is mentioned again in 1432 as Tristram Gorti of that Ilk (Inchaffray, p. 128,147; Athole, p. 706,707). In 1470 we have a bond of manrent by a succeeding Tristrem of Gorte of that Ilk to Laurence, lord Oliphant for two years (Oliphants, p. 16). Tristram continued as a personal name in the family of Gorthy for nearly four hundred years. Wille Gorthy, a follower of Campbell of Lundy, appears in 1541 (RSS., II, 3666). The surname continued in Dunblane in the sixteenth century (Dunblane).
