Gotobed Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Godbert.' This surname must unquestionably be referred back to Godebert (Yonge), though after a time the name has itself suggested a jeu a esprit.
The following instances will suffice for evidence:
Roger Godberd, Nottinghamshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
John Gotebedde, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Roger Godeberd. Placitorum in domo capitulari Westmonasteriensi.
Henry Gotobed, temp. 1580. Calendar of Proceedings in Chancery, temp. Elizabeth I.
Johannes Gotobedde (RR. 1) seems to mark the divergence into a pleasantry. Mr. Lower quotes 'Robert Gotobedd, Winchelsea, Edward I. Juliana Gotobedde, ibid.' A mere nickname would not be found all over the country. It appears certain that Godebert is the root of all.
1621. Ann Gotobed: Cal. of Wills in Court of Husting (2).
1760. Married — Charles Godbed and Penelope Cooper: St. George, Hanover Square.
“Pray to God” in Old English (Gott-Bet).
Old German, Gott-bet, 'Pray to God.' Talbot's Engl, Etymol, Robert Gotobedd, Winchelsea, 20. Edw. I. Juliana Gotebedde, ibid. (Cooper). Notwithstanding Mr, Talbot's conjecture, we may as well, perhaps, take this name au pied de la lettre, and assume that it was given as a sobriquet to people more than ordinarily attached to their couch, A similar collocation of words forming a surname occurs in the H.R., viz.: Serlo Go-to-kirke, which was borne by one of the cottars of the hundred of Trippelowe, co. Cambridge, temp, Edw. I.-most probably in allusion to his constant attention to his public devotions.
Mr. Fox Talbot derives this name from Old German Gott-bet, "Pray to God." Lower gives a Gotobedd and a Gotebedde, and thinks the name may have been given as a sobriquet to people more than ordinarily attached to their couch; and he says a similar collocation of words forming a surname occurs in the H.R.; viz., Serlo Go-to-kirke. The whole name may be from guthr-beada, a war counsellor; or the last part from Anglo-Saxon boda, a messenger. It may also be a compound of two names. Obed is a surname at the present day. compare Meyerbeer, from Meyer Beer. GOUT. See Goat.
From the Old Norse, Guðbjártr; from the Anglo-Saxon, Cuthbert; in the Domesday Book, Gutbert; a personal name.
