Patrick Gothrason leased part of Cupar Grange c. 1446 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 124). Thomas Gnthrasoune, a boy of eight years of age, was publicly flogged for interfectio in Legerwood, 1493 (Trials, I, p. 16). John Gotherstoun or Gotterson is recorded in Dunfermline, 1579—86 (Dunfermline), and William Gotterstoune was burgess there, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 185). Quintiane Gottersoun in Shaws, parish of Dalserf, is recorded in 1601 (Campsie), and Alexander Gottersoun in North Berwick, 1623 (Retours, Haddington, 447). John Gotterson at Laudermylle, 1638, and three more of the name are recorded near there (Lauder). Claims were made against Robert Guttersone in Stitchill, 1666, and Isabel and Catharine Gotterstone were indwellers there, 1737 (Stitchill, p. 39,194). There is a farm named Cotterston (a contraction of 'Guthrie's town') near Dundee, but the name seems more likely of southern origin.
