Variants of Goldie, which see, of which they are the popular pronunciation, e.g."Goudie terror o' the Whigs" of Bums. The name appears in Edinbergh from 1598 onwards (Edinb. Marr.) in the forms Gowdie, Gaudie, Goddie. Robert Gowdie writer in Edinbergh, 1643 (Inquis., 2797), and John Gawdie was one of "those who ere matriculat in the Companie of Merchands of Edinbergh," 1687 (Sc. Ant., XII, p. 128). William Goudie in Ayr, 1689 (RPC., 3 ser. XIV, p. 674). The surname was early carried to the north appearing in Shetland first in 1576 in the person of Gawane Gadie of Lougasettar, Dunrossness (Oppressions, p. 73, 81; Goudie, p. 71). William Gady was servitor to Magnus Loutfuie of Fleck, 1603 (OSR., I, p. 226). Gayn (Gavin) Gadie in Clumlie died in 1629 (Sc. Ant., XII, p. 39). There was a town or village of this name and a "Little Goudie Chapel." It existed in the policies of Camperdown (Maxwell, Old Dundee, 1891).
