From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Of local origin from some small place probably in Roxburghshire or Selkirkshire. It is said to be an old surname and place name in Ayrshire, in the fifteenth century spelled Gavenleck, but I have found no record of this. Richard Gowanlok was a charter witness in Edinburgh in 1471 (Neubotle, 303), and Patrick Gowanlok was banished the town in 1530 for harboring a woman infected with the pestilence (MCM., II, p. 106). Gilbert Gowanlock appears in Beimersyd in 1637 (Lauder), George Gowdelock was a merchant in Legertwood in 1767 (ibid.), and Robert Govanlock became landlord of the old Mosspaul Inn in 1816. Gavinlock's Land was an old tenement in the Lawnmarket of Edinburgh, and in 1837 it housed about 300 persons. Govanlock in Melrose in 1942. compare Goudielock.
