User-submitted Reference

Probably a misspelling of "Graaf" carried out through generations. "Graaf" means "count" (nobility title) in dutch, usually accompanied by the name of a region referring to the title. In Holland there was a time when "graaf" title could be awarded by the king or queen or bought for large amounts of money, thus spreading this surname and its descendants. Over generations the place to witch it refers to may have been lost. This surname is most prevalent in Netherlands, old colonies or families originated from those regions.
