Grablev Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The basis of the surname Grablev was probably the worldly name Grab. The worldly name Grab comes from a similar name for the hornbeam tree. Before the introduction of Christianity in Russia, naming a child by a name representing the name of an animal or plant was a very widespread tradition. This corresponded to the pagan ideas of man about the world. The ancient Russian man, who lived according to the laws of nature, felt himself to be a part of it. Giving the baby such a name as Grab, the parents wanted nature to perceive the child as her own, so that those useful qualities that this tree is endowed with would be transferred to him. Hornbeam has great strength, in the old days it was even used to make axles for carts. Naming their son the name Grab, his parents wanted him to grow up strong, healthy and hardy.
The noun 'grab' is found in all Slavic languages. Presumably, it is related to the verb 'grabit', that is, 'plunder'. Most likely, the tree was named so because leaves and branches were 'raked' (that is, plucked) from it to feed livestock. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the name of the hornbeam in Latin is carpinus (from carpo - 'to tear, to pluck').
It should be noted that the surname Grablev is a second order patronymic: Grablev - Grablya's son - Grab's grandson. Moreover, the surname Grablev is very ancient. This is indicated by the fact that the name Grabl is formed from a noun using the suffix -l (other examples: Yaroslav - Yaroslavl, Yakov - Yakovl - Yakovlev). This method of word formation was rare and fell out of use early. Grabl, eventually got the name Grablev.
According to another version, the surname Grablev is a Russified version of the German surname 'Grable'. It is based on a similar nickname, which is derived from the German word Graben - 'ditch'. It can be assumed that the nickname Grable was given to a person who lived next to a ditch, ravine, or a digger.
