Graddy Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Draddy is a name which should have been included in Appendix F of Irish Families since not only do modern statistics show that it is almost exclusively a Co. Cork name, but as far back as it appears in records it is invariably associated with Co. Cork. The prefix O was dropped very early: The Cork and Ross wills, the earliest of which is 1629, are signed Draddy and even in the sixteenth century Fiants, six of which list Draddys (all in Co. Cork), only one is given the 0. John Draddy, the Co. Cork Gaelic scribe, whose work was done mainly between 1820 and 1840, used the form Ó Dreada in Irish.
Woulfe treats Graddy either as a variant of O'Grady or as the anglicized form of Ó Greada; Richard Foley (Nat. Library MS. G. 841) suggests that it is a variant of Draddy and the fact that Graddys are found almost exclusively in Cos. Cork and Kerry is worth noting in that connexion. It is inevitable that a rare name like Graddy should be swallowed by the well known Grady and this has been recorded as occurring more than once in the Listowel area. Draddy has also been used as a synonym of Drudy (Ó Draoda), a north Connacht surname.
