From the lands of Graden, near Coldstream, Berwickshire. Peter de Grayden granted to Julian, his eldest daughter, two bovates of land, with pertinents, in the town and territory of Grayaene, c. 1288 (Edmonstone, p. 76). Among the witnesses are Walter de Grayden and Herbert de Graydene. Wautier de Greydene of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a crown of thorns and S' Walt' d' Graydn (Bain, II, p. 202,557). Robert Graiden is recorded in Graystainerig in 1653 and John Grayden in Earnshaw in 1698 (Lauder). A family of this name held the lands of Ernslaw or Erneslaw in the parish of Eccles in the seventeenth century (Retours, Berwickshire, 211,329, 380,434). Graidin 1673.
