Thomas Graynger. Valor Ecclesiasticus.
"The farms, which are still found throughout the country in the neighbourhood of old abbeys, named 'The Grange,' were the farm steadings where the monks carried on their fanning operations, and where the grain and cattle derived from their more distant possessions were stored and housed. Around the grange' were clustered numerous cottages for the labourers and their families, and the whole was under the charge of a monk, or lay brother, named from his office-'The Granger'" (Laing, Lindores Abbey and its burgh of Newburgh, p. 61). In Latin the name of the office was rendered granatarius, 'manager of the victual,' and appears in Scots as granitar, graintlie-man, or gryntal-man. Gocelin, brother of Hugh Granger, witnessed the grant of the church of Pulloc to the monks of Paisley, c. 1189—99 (RMP., p. 100). Robert de la Graunge of the county of Roxburghe rendered homage in 1296 and in 1303 served as juror on an inquisition made at Roxburgh Bain, II, p. 199,376). In 1299 Robert the 'granatorius ' of Holyrood took oath to be a true liegeman to the king of England (ibid., p. 268). John Graneter was juror on an inquest at Inverness in 1430 (RMS., II, 179). Grenger 1595.
