Local. (French.) A town in France on the English channel, Grande—ville—the great town or city. De Grandville.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

The Grenvilles or Greenfields of Neath and Bideford adopted, instead of the paternal coat (a cross), the three rests of the Earls of Gloucester, their feudal suzerains. The name, however, was still written Grenville, Greenfield, and Grenfell, though the Earls of Bath adopted the form of Granville. A fabulous pedigree was concocted for this family in the 17th cent., making them descend from Fitz-Hamon; but this descent is absolutely without proof. See Grenville. Hence the Earls of Bath and Lords Granville.
