Granville Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Grenville,' doubtless the same as Granville, a familiar seaport of Lower Normandy. The Grenvilles of Wootton, Buckinghamshire, descend from Richard de Grenville, who came in with the Conqueror in the train of Walter Giffard, Earl of Longueville and Buckingham; v. Lower's Patronymica Britannica. I subjoin a few spellings from the Hundred Rolls:
Thomas de Grenville, Oxfordshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Richard de Grenville, Oxfordshire, ibid.
William de Grenvile, Oxfordshire, ibid.
Adam de Greynevile, Wiltshire, ibid.
Eustace de Greynville, Buckinghamshire, ibid.
1666. Richard Grenvill (Buckinghamshire) and Elianore Temple: Marriage Alleg. (Canterbury).
1676. Robert Maur and Elizabeth Greinvile: ibid.
(French-Latin) belonging to Granville or Grandville (France) = the Big Estate, Farm, or Village [French grand(e, Latin grand-is, big+French ville, Latin villa] This name was Latinized in our mediæval records de Granda Villa.
N.B.—Grandville in Belgium is a corrupt form of Gerenne-vilhe = Warin’s Estate.
Local. (French.) A town in France on the English channel, Grande—ville—the great town or city. De Grandville.
The Grenvilles or Greenfields of Neath and Bideford adopted, instead of the paternal coat (a cross), the three rests of the Earls of Gloucester, their feudal suzerains. The name, however, was still written Grenville, Greenfield, and Grenfell, though the Earls of Bath adopted the form of Granville. A fabulous pedigree was concocted for this family in the 17th cent., making them descend from Fitz-Hamon; but this descent is absolutely without proof. See Grenville. Hence the Earls of Bath and Lords Granville.
