Only one family and descendant families exist in New Zealand carrying this name. This name first appeared in New Zealand in 1910 with the first written record appearing on wedding papers dated 1912 when a Frithjof AlbertWaldemar Granwal (so he claimed) married Lillian Monckton Leaver in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He stated that he was born in Oregon, USA in 1888, his father being Albert, a rope maker and his mother Joanne. No such people have surfaced from extensive record searches. Frithjof, from that point in time only ever recorded his name as Frank Granwal and once as Frank Granval. He spoke several languages and English with a guttural Germanic accent, maybe Swedish or Norwegian. He disappeared from New Zealand's records in 1928 never to be heard from again.
