From Gaelic greusaich or griasaich, 'shoemaker.'"The term greosaighe in the older language meant 'decorator,' 'embroiderer; the modern 'shoemaker' is a specialized meaning" (Watson I, p. 410). The name is of frequent occurrence in Aberdeenshire, particularly in the parishes of Glenbuchat and Strathdon. The local pronunciation is Gracey, whence the softened forms Grassie and Grass, which see. John Grasse alias Cordonar was one of the tenants of the Kirktoun of Crathe (i.e. Crathienaird) in 1539 (ER., XVII, p. 658). Donald Grasycht is in record in Lochalsh in 1548 (RMS., IV, 204), Elspet Grassiche in Tullochaspak appears in 1612 (RSCA., II, p. 187), and Patrick Gressiche was cordyner in Stron, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 644). David Grassiche in Kepache was changed with violence in 1617 (RPC., XI, p. 68), Gillecallum Graysich in Molaii and John M'Gillepatrik Grasich were Glenerquhay's vassals, 1638 (BBT., p. 403). Andrew Greasich appears in Loggies in 1649 (IDR., p. 369), and Alexander Greoschich (Greoshlch, or Greishich) in Towie who was accused of curing cattle by charming, 1669 (Alford, p. 143,146) may be the Alexander Greshach who was elder at Strathdone in 1686 (ibid., p. 375).
