Gravdahl Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname is Norwegian and is composed by two parts: grav and dal. The first part, grav, means 'dig' or 'carve out' (there is also a homonym, grav, meaning 'grave' or 'tomb', but that is not the origin of this name). The second part, dal, means 'valley'. This gives the meaning of the surname as 'carved out valley', specifically a valley carved out by a river. There are numerous valleys like this in Norway, and hence there are numerous places in Norway called "Gravdal". When Norway got its Law on surnames in 1922, for the first time everyone in Norway had to have a surname. Many people chose the name of the farm they were living on, and several different families with the name "Gravdal" arose, unrelated to one another. The most common spelling is "Gravdal", then "Gravdahl", with almost no one using the variant "Gravdhal". The difference stems from the Danish influence on Norwegian language. In Danish, several words are spelled with a silent h. To many Norwegians, adding a silent h to their surname in 1922 gave the name a more aristocratic look.
