Greatrex Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the great ridge'; v. Rigg and Ridge, (a) Local, 'at the great rake or rakes.' 'Rake, a rut, crack, or crevice. North'(Halliwell). In Furness and Cumberland it seems to have been a sheep-track up the fells. But of this I cannot speak positively. I had both Rake and Outrake as localities in my late parish (Ulverston). Probably Raikes owes its origin to one of these many places. Thus Greatorex seems to be either 'of the great ridge' or 'of the great rakes,' from residence thereby. If the former, then ridge has been sharpened into rex.

1382. Augustine Brandon and Elizabeth Greatracks, of Westham, Essex: Marriage Lic. (London).

1647. Married — Samuel Gratrix and Jane Wingfield: St. James, Clerkenwell.

1659. Married — John Greatrake and Ursula Whitaker: ibid.

1697. — James Berry and Rebecca Greatrick: ibid.
