Greenspan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(German) One who made and used or sold verdigris, a substance much used in early chemical arts.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

(from an ancestor's occupation) Greenspan is the German word for verdigris, a green pigment used in dyeing and in medicine. The English word comes from verd de Grece, the green of Greece. The German word is “green of Spain,” because this copper pigment came to Germany from Spain. The name was assumed by one who sold this pigment.
