From the Greek personal name Γρμγόριοζ, through Latin Gregorius 'watchman.' Several early Scots bishops bore this name, appropriate for the overseer of a church. Gregorius Duncheldensis, episcopus, c. 1150 (REG., 11); Gregorius episcopus de Ros, 1171—84 (REM., 3); Gregorius Moraviensis episcopus, 1150 (RD., 1). Gregory of Rutherford was a charter witness in reign of William the Lion (Melros). William filius Gregorii, provost of Crail, 1330 (ER., I, p. 265). Thomas Gregory was accused of deforcing in 1569 (RPC., I, p. 685). John Gegorie was minister of Drumoak in 1633 (SCM., III, p. 94), and Master Alexander Gregorie was retoured heir of Master John Gregorie, sometime minister of Dilmaik, his father, in 1651 (Retours, Aberdeen, 308). Patrick Grige was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1488 (NSCM., I, p. 33), and John Grige held land there, 1493 (REA., I, p. 334). Johannes Greg was chosen common councillor in Aberdeen, 1502 (Guildry, p. 192). David Greg was member of council of Stirling, 1522 (SBR., p. 275), and Paul Grege in Leith accepted the king's coronation, 1567 (RPC., I, p. 563). The Norwegian Griegs are descended from John Grieg of Fraserburgh, whose son Alexander (1739—1803) settled in Bergen, 1779. The father of Edward Grieg (1843—1907), the composer, was British consul at Bergen (Konvenations Leksikon, Kristiania, 1921). Admiral Greig of the Russian Navy was a Scot. See under Girig for origin.
