Greising Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
An old, formerly very respectable family, registered in the Reichsritterschaftskantone Röhn-Werra, which was already known in 1300 as Würzburgische Vasallen.
Johannes Greising was in 1466 land judge of the duchy Franconia and in 1472 Spirituali-Bus-Vicarius Generalis. He is buried in the cathedral church of Würzburg. (See Silver & Rehearsals of the German nobility pag. 458 and Biedermann etc.).
They carried a red boar's head in the Golden Shield and on the helmet a symbol of strength and power, which indicates that the bearers of this coat of arms and name will and should always fight fearlessly with violence and courage against enemies of the fatherland.
The Greisings led two red diamonds in gold times ago, but because Jobst Greising in 1329 threw himself at the bishop of Grumbach as the same of a wild boar with great boldness and killed him; the bishop ordered him, when he laid the bloody boar's head at his feet, that he should lead the bloody head from then on in the shield in memory of his saving deed. (Copy of an Episode from the Genealogical Archive of Vienna, 1329).
