From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Most probably from one of several places in England named Grindon or Grendon. The manor of Grindon in Cumberland was originally held of the kings of Scotland by the Grindon family in drengage (Moore, Lands p. 40). William de Grendon rendered homage at Berwick, 1291 (RR.). The land of Reginald de Grendoun in Aberdeen is mentioned 1317 (SCM., V, p. 7). John of Grendon had a protection in England for a year in 1372 (Bain, IV, 202). See Grinton.
Apparently the Graundyn of Leland’s list This spelling gives the name a French aspect; but there seems no reason to doubt Dugdale’s assertion that it was assumed from Grendon in Warwickshire. “Roger de Grendon first took his sirname from thence in King Stephen’s time. Which Roger of his Father was originally enfeoft thereof in Henry the First’s Time, by Camville, who (it seems) had the first grant of it from the said Henry, or his son.” This family was baronial, and lasted till the end of Edward III.’s reign. But it has no claim to be included here.
The mayors of Exeter in 1395 and 1407 bore the name of Grendon (I.). Thomas Grendyn was one of the Ashburton churchwardens in 1482 (A.). There are places of this name in Bucks, and De Grendon was a Bucks surname in the 13th century (H. R.).
