Derby, exist, I should be disposed to assign, as the ancestor of the family, that Domesd. tenant, Albertus Greslet, who held "inter Ripam et Mersam;"but the Gresley pedigree is clearly traced to the Conquest, and even to an earlier date, as cadets of the great house of Toni, hereditary standard-bearers of Normandy. Lysons' Derb, "Descended from Nigel, called De Stafford, mentioned in Domesd. and said to have been a younger son of Boger de Toni, and very soon after the Conquest established in Derbyshire, first at Gresley (unde nomen) and afterwards at Drakelow in the same parish," where they still remain.
