Shortened from Macgruar, which see. One of the oldest recorded surnames in Braemar. Persons of this name appear to have been long settled in Kindrocht (now known as Braemar), and on the tombstone of James Gruar in Tominrau, who died in 1807, is the following verse:

"Four hundred years have now wheeled round, With half a century more;

Since this has been the burying ground Belonging to the Gruers."

John Grewyr was tenant in Fortour c. 1520 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 300), and Thomas Growar, burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1628 (Burgesses).
