Gribben Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Gribín Widespread in the north-eastern counties of Ulster; where it is found as MacGribben, it is a variant of MacCribbin i.e. Mac Roibin, a Connacht name. Its synonym MacRobin is now very rare. SIF 83
Although Cribben occurs in the official registration returns as having been used as a synonym of Gribben these two names are actually quite distinct. O'Gribben (i.e. Ó Gribín in Irish) belongs almost exclusively to Ulster but is fairly widespread in that province. In 1866 there were 47 births registered for Gribben, Gribben and Gribbon (none with the prefix O) all except two in Ulster, mainly in the five north-eastern counties-the other two were in Co. Mayo; and in 1890, the last year for which such detailed statistics are available, 27 out of the 28 births were in Ulster, 24 of these in Down, Antrim and Armagh. The family has not been prominent in the history of the country, but those who have left their mark belong to those counties: there are, for example, five O'Gribbens among the Jacobites outlawed in 1690 and following years all of Down or Antrim; and two Gaelic scribes of some note in the seventeenth and eighteenth century called Ó Gribín were from Co. Down.
O'Gribbin appears in the Co. Armagh hearth money rolls of 1664-65, as also does MacGribben.
The latter may of course be an example of the not uncommon official confusion between Mac and 0 (especially with names beginning with G, C and K), or it may possibly be an anglicized form of Mag Roibín, a variant of Mac Roibín, whence Cribben. MacRobin as an anglicized form is very rare, if not obsolete, but it occurs in the Galway Book of Survey Distribution (temp. Charles II) and Cribben, which is rare, is found in Co. Mayo, where no doubt Gribben (referred to above in relation to Mayo) is a substitute for it. It may be added that MacRoben and MacRobyn occur in the Fiants of 1566 to 1573 as kern in Co. Louth (twice), and in Counties Carlow and Wexford, though these may not be hereditary surnames; they also appear occasionally in the Inquisitions for Queen's County and Wexford (1604-1628).
