GRIFFINHOOFE: This Germ, name was introduced into England by one of the physicians of Geo. I. Mr. Fox Talbot observes that, "one might suppose this to be from the Germ, grafen-hof, implying some person attached to the court of a count," if there had not existed a Germ, family name Greifenklau, or the Griffin's Claw. English Etym. 302. In medieval poems &c. many references to griffins' claws are found. In "Ruodlieb," the hero wears, apparently, a hunting horn made of such a talon.

Mr. Fox Talbot says one might suppose this to be from the German, grafen-hof, implying some person attached to the court of a count, if there had not existed a German family name Greifenklau, or the Griffin's claw; and Lower says, "In mediæval poems, &c., many references to griffins' daws are found. In 'Ruodlieb' the hero wears, apparently, a hunt­ing horn made of such a talon. 'Pendet et a niveo sibimet gripis urngula collo'" The name probably means the "count's yard or court."
