The first reference may be from Old English grimm 'grim,' 'fierce.' The later references may be forms of Graham, which see. Grim, Grym and Gryme are not uncommon in England in thirteenth and fourteenth centeries (Bardsley). Thomas Grym witnessed a confirmation by Patrick, earl of Dunber, n.d. (Neubotle, p. 81.) Cuthbert Grym was pledge for Andro Fishar, 1488 (Lanark, p. 4), and William Grime was burgess of Montrose, 1635 (Jervise, I, p. 161). Sir James Grym was co-notary in Strathmiglo, 1541 (Gaw, 63). Isobel Gryme is recorded in Montrose, 1641, and another Isobel Grim in Dundee, 1683 (Brechin) "I'm damned if I will sail with you, Sir Graham, Though I may seem uncivil, But Graham is Graeme, and Graham is Grim, And Grim, sir, is the Devil." - Old Ballad.
