This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Grimbald,' a once familiar personal name in England. Gribble is the modern accepted surnominal form, although the more correct Grimble exists. Grimbald, a Saxon saint, was a monk of St. Omer, but placed at Oxford by King Alfred. Amongst the benefactorsof Conishead Priory, in Furness, was 'Jordan, fil. Hugh, fil. Grimbald' (West's Ant. of Furness). Grimbald of Plessis joined a rebellion against Duke William (Freeman's Norman Conq. ii. 244).
