GRINDEGRETH: A family named Grindegreth or Grindegret was prominent in Dumfriesshire in the thirteenth century. Johannes Grindegret witnessed a charter of a carucate of land in Langholme c. 1270 to Herbert Maxwell (Pollok, I, p. 125; RHM., II, p. 7). The family also made grants to Lanercost and Holmcultran, c. 1280—90, and one of the family was burgess of Dumfries c. 1290 (Edgar, p. 7,220, 222). Grindagret in Holm Cultran Register looks like Norse for 'door-stone,' grindargrjot.
