User-submitted Reference
Many Griswolds in the United States have been traced back to the New Bern area of North Carolina in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, as well as to Pennsylvania. The original settlers to America (mostly settling in colonial Pennsylvania) seem to have split into two Griswold families. One went to New York and the other to North Carolina, then spreading throughout the United States. In the US, there are towns named after the family.
Before they arrived into America, they were greyhound breeders in England, most honorably for nobles such as King Edward I. It has been theorized to be a surname of Germanic, meaning 'grey woods'.
