Hugo Grot was chaplain in Wick in 1530 (Trials, I, p. 149), and William Grot was retoured heir of Malcolm Grot of Tankernes, his grandfather, in 1632 (Retours, Orkney, 18). The name is most probably from Low German or Dutch groot (pron. grote), 'great, tall.' Robert Mackay, History of the house of Mackay, 1829, has a silly story of the origin of the name. Groit 1630. Grott 1726.
