Groot Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

In 1496 William de St. Clair, earl of Caithness, granted to John Grot, son of Hugh Grot, a charter of one pennyland in Duncansbay, Caithness (Calder, Sketches of history of Caithness, 1861, p. 245). The name is also found in Fife, and till within recent years it was common in Dysart, being found there so early as 1545, when Christinn Grott and Walter Grote appear in record, and Henricus Grot in 1571 (Dysart, p. 14, 15, 36). Hugo Grot was chaplain in Wick in 1530 (Trials, I, p. 149), and William Grot was retoured heir of Malcolm Grot of Tankernes, his grandfather, in 1632 (Retours, Orkney, 18). The name is most probably from Low German or Dutch groot (pron. grote), 'great, tall.' Robert Mackay, History of the house of Mackay, 1829, has a silly story of the origin of the name. Groit 1630. Grott 1726.

(Dutch) The big, or tall, man; one who came from Groot (large place) in Holland.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Originally De Groot, (that is the great or big) from Holland. The real surname of the illustrious Grotius. The connection between the Dutch and English Groots is sufficiently shewn in one of Dr. Johnson's letters to his friend, Dr. Vyse, of Lambeth. "I doubt not but you will readily forgive me for taking the liberty of requesting your assistance in recommending an old friend to his Grace the Archbishop, as Governor of the Charter-House. His name is De Groot; he was bom in Gloucester; I have known him many years. He has all the common claims to charity, being old, poor, and infirm in a great degree. He has likewise another claim, to which no scholar can refuse attention; he is by several descents the nephew of Hugo Grotius-of him from whom perhaps every man of learning has learnt something. Let it not be said in any lettered country that a nephew of Grotius asked a charity and was refused. I am, reverend sir, your most humble servant, Sam. Johnson. July 9, 1777."

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

(Dutch.) Local. Large, great, the great man. Groot is also a name of a town in Holland, whence the surname may be derived—the great town, De Groot.
