Groutas Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Groutas is a surname that first appears in Cyprus in the western European communities that were active in the island during the early Ottoman period. It is the localized variant of the surname of the Crutta family that came from Venetian territories in the island. Since 1693, they acted as diplomats and interpreters (dragomans) of England, France and other European states in the Ottoman court. In 1745, one of them appears as dragoman in the European community of Larnaca. The Crutta family (Krytha or Kryethi in the original spelling) was of Albanian origin from a clan that lived the eastern Adriatic in the coastal area on the border between Albania and Montenegro. After the fall of the country to the Ottomans, many of them took refuge in Venetian Zadar in Croatia from where they spread in the following centuries throughout Europe. A member of this family, Antonio Crutta was ennobled in Poland in the 18th century for his services to Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski.
