G, Gille Brighde, 'S. Bride's servant.' Gilbride or Gillebride was a common name in the middle ages but is now little used. Gilbertus or Gilbert, which see, was early conceived to be its equivalent and eventually superseded it, e.g., Gilbert or Gilbreid McGloid, a tenant in Tlree, 1541 (ER., XVII, p. 614). Gillbride was the name of the father of Somerled. Gilbryde Macgideride witnessed a charter of the lands of Duueglas (Douglas) to Theobald the Fleming, c. 1147—60 (Kelso, 107). Ggillebrite, earl of Angus, one of the witnesses to King David's protection to the clerics of Deer, c. 1150 (Bk. Deer) appears c. 1178—98 as Gilbride or Gillebrid (RAA., I, 12,193). Gillebride, parson of Abirtarf, witnessed the great charter by Bishop Brice "de fundationis canonicorum apud Spyni," c. 1210 (REM., p. 43). Gillebride was one of the jury that made inquiry into the marches of Wester Fedale in Perthshire, 1246 (LAC., p. 26).
