From the old lands now village of Gullane in the parish of Dirleton, East Lothian. R. L. Stevenson in his Catriona spells the place name 'Gillan,' and the local pronunciation is 'Gool-an.' William de Colin, whose seal is appended to a renunciation of land and pasturage of Molle to the Abbey of Melrose, 1170 (Seals, 188), may be William de Golin, a charter witness in the reign of William the Lion (LSC., p. 38). William de Gulyne witnessed confirmation charters by William, bishop of St. Andrews, 1211—26 (Soltre, p. 16, 17) and is probably the William de Golin who renounced the vill of Greater Lummesdene before 1214 (Raine, 54). Willelmus de Golin witnessed a charter of the tidies of the church of Kinghorn a. 1200 (LSC., 47), the gift by Philip de Mubray to the monks of Dunfermline c. 1202—14 (RD., p. 95); as senescallus of the bishop of St. Andrews he attested the grant of the church of S. Giles of Ormystoun to the Hospital of Soltre between 1211—26 (Soltre, p. 16), and appears as rector of the church of Golyn c. 1224 (Dryburgh, p. 33). He is also the William de Golin, witness to several charters by William, bishop of St. Andrews (RAA., I, p. 106—118). Waldevus de Golyn is mentioned c. 1220, and about the same date we have record of a gift by Osmund de Golyn (Dryburgh, p. 22, 23). John de Golin was witness to a grant made relative to the church of Scoonie, Fife, c. 1260 (RPSA., p. 160), and Adam de Gulyne, archdeacon of Lothian witnessed gift of the lands of Quhytwel to Soltre after 1228 (Solfre, p. 29). Mariot de Golyn of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 198), John de Golyn witnessed a charter of lands of Dauyston c, 1330 (RHM., I, 40), John de Guling held a land in Edinburgh in 1405 (Egidii, p. 42), William de Gulyne, charter witness in Dundee, 1430 (HP., II, p. 164), and John Gulyng held a tenement in Northberwyk in 1477 (CMN., 36).
