(a) Bapt. 'the son of Gunther,' which see.
The Old Teutonic Gunther, Gundhar, &c. [v. under Gundry, and+ Old Saxon O.H.Ger. heri, hari (=O.E. here), army] Gunter occurs in Domesday Book.
(German, English) Descendant of Gunter (war, bold).
A tradition in the family says, from gamut d'or, allusive to the golden gauntlets in their arms; but this is very improbable. Guntaric was an old Teutonic personal name, and Gonther and Gunter appear as tenants in Domesd.
Supposed to be the same as Ingulphus, from In and golpe, Belgic, to swallow down, to devour. The name may be local, and given to a native of Gaunt or Ghent.
N. Gontier, Normandy 1180 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); Sir Peter Gontier or Gunter accompanied Bernard de Neumarchd in the conquest of Brecknock 1088, and obtained a fief there (Jones, Brecknock, i. 92).
(English), Gunther (Gothic), In battle chief. (variant: Heringa.)
Gunter is a name that was represented in Oxfordshire in the 13th century (H. R.), and two centuries earlier there were tenants named Gunter and Gonter mentioned in Domesday. In Berkshire the name has long been known. It is now found at Newbury. Nicholas Gunter was mayor of Reading in 1618, 1626, 1627, and 1628 (Co.); and in 1624 a gentleman of this name was buried in Kentbury Church (A.). Farther back still, in the reign of Henry VI., the Gunters were Berkshire gentlemen (Cl.). Colonel Gunter, who was a zealous adherent of Charles II., belonged to a family living at Racton, Sussex, in the 16th and 17th centuries, and hailing from Gilleston in Wales before that time (Lower's "Sussex). The name also occurs in Gloucestershire, and a reference will be found to it under that county.
Gunter was a name represented in Almondsbury last century. It has been found for many centuries in this part of England. We find it in the adjacent county of Oxford at the close of the 13th century (H. R.); and early in the 18th century a family of this name owned the Priory, Abergavenny, in the neighbouring county of Monmouth (Duncumb's "Herefordshire").
The name of Gunter is not now numerous enough in the Principality to be included in the list of Welsh names. The Gunters of Tregunter, a knightly Breconshire family of the 16th and 17th centuries, were distinct from the notable family of Gunter of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, in the 17th and 18th centuries (Jones' "Brecknockshire" and Coxe's "Monmouthshire"). The ancient home of the name is in England, and further reference to it will be found under Berkshire and Gloucestershire.
