GUPILD: From the OF. goupil 'fox,' with accretionary d. The word still survives in modern French goupillon, a sprinkler, originally made of a fox's tail. A family of this name took a prominent part in the affairs of Edinburgh in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Payments were made to Matthew Gupi or Gupil by the custumar of Cupar and by the custumars of Edinburgh in 1328 (ER., I, p. 95,100). William Cuppylde who had a charter of the lands of Lumtethyn and Cragoc in the sheriffdom of Forfar from his cousin in 1366 (RMS., I, 247; Macfarlane, II, p. 465) is doubtless the William Gopeld who with Walter Gopeld complained of being plundered by wreckers in England in 1370 (Bain, IV, 164). William Guppild is recorded as alderman and burgess of Edinburgh in 1368 and 1380 (Egidii, p. 1; Laing, 67). The tenement of John Gupilde in Edinburgh is mentioned in 1468 (Neubotle, 299,302). Gupilt 1382.
