Guragain Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

There are three types of Bramhin in Nepal: Purbiya (Khas) that are originally from the far western and western part of Nepal such as Khanal, Kuikel, Parajuli, Luitel etc.; Jaisi are those who themselves or their ancestors married a person from any other caste, i.e. Chhetri (Kashetriya) or any other caste - they are known as Jhareko Bahun (Bahuns that have lost their divinity); and Kumai Bahuns that originated from a place called Kumaun. There are an abundance of Kumai Bahuns in Nepal, as Kumaun was ceded to The British after the Anglo-Nepal war or soon after the Sugaulisandhi (Sugauli treaty). People who are originally from Kumaun are called Kumai Bahuns and Guragain (Gooragaine) are Kumai Bahuns who are considered to be the second most pure Bramhins in Nepal, after the Khas Bahuns or the Maithil Bahuns. Their origin is roughly from the Terai region of Nepal, which is followed by the Jaisi Bahuns. There is an abundance of Guragain (Gooragain) people in Nepal and some of them have considered themselves to be Upadhya Bahuns (Khas/Purbiya Bahuns).
