(French) Descendant of Gurie or Guris (rich, powerful).
William de Gueri 1165 held lands in capite in Passy, Normandy. "Mont-guerré was the designation of one of the component terres of the Marquisate of Châtillon, derived apparently from the tenure of William Geré." - T. Stapleton. (Feod. Norm. Duchesne). In Domesday “Gueri, a canon of St.Paul’s,” held in Twyford, Middlesex. Alured Geri, of Shropshire, is mentioned in the Rotulis Cancellarii of 1202, and Hugo Gery paid a fine in Berkshire in 1213. - Hunter. In Yorkshire “Guerri” witnessed the deed of gift by which Robert de Brus (who died in 1141) conferred the manor of Elwick on his daughter Agatha as her marriage portion. - Gale's Richmondshire. William Gurry, of Wiltshire, occurs in the time of Edward I. - Rotuii Hundredorum. The Lincolnshire estates of Adam Lord Newmarch, taken prisoner at the battle of Northampton in 1263, were granted by Henry III. to William de Gery—perhaps the same William. Many of the name arc found at about the same date in Shropshire. Henri Geri and Geoffrey Geri of Mose are mentioned there in 1262: Roger Gery two years before that: and in 1272 Walter de Geri was arrested for the murder of John de Gatacre. Herbert de Gerys was a land-owner in the county: and Richard Gery of Acton-Reynald witnesses a number of deeds in that neighbourhood between 1299 and 1330. The last of them named by Eyton, Thomas Geri, was Vicar of Moreton-Corbett in 1371. “The Gerys of Beds, and a younger branch seated at Swebston, bore Gules two bars Argent, charged with three mascles of the field. The first mentioned is Thomas Gery of Royston, Sheriff of Cambridgeshire in 1509.”—Nichol's Leicestershire. His descendants still remain in Bedfordshire, seated at Bushmead Priory. In the last century there was likewise a Sir Thomas Gery of Great Ealing, Middlesex (who does not appear in their pedigree), one of whose co-heiresses married Sir John Cullum, Bt.
