From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the old burgh of the name in East Lothian. Rannulfus de Hadintun was one of the first to build a house in the new burgh of Glasgow, c. 1177—99 (LCD., p. 235; Innes, Sketches of early Scotch history, p. 120). Malcolmus de Hadingtouna was a burgess of Aberdeen in 1317 (SCM., V, p. 11), and Thomas de Hadington was vicar of Marchinche (Markinch) in 1332 (Pap. Lett., II, p. 508). Sir J. of Hadingtun was prior of St. Andrews in 1269 (RPSA., p. 349), and David de Hadingtone and Johan de Hadyntone both of the county of Fyfe rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 204). John Hadyngton, a Scottish merchant, petitioned the English chancellor for redress in 1405, and James of Hadyngton, Scots merchant, had a safe conduct in England in 1422 (Bain, IV, 712. 921). John Haadingtoun was chaplain in St. Andrews diocese in 1456 (CAB., p. 395), Johannes de Hadingtoune was burgess of Perth in 1440 (RD., p. 297), Sir Henry Hadingtoun was vicar of Kincardin-onele and Master of the Hospital of the Trinity College beside Edinburgh in 1511 (Soltre, p. 85), and Jhon Hedingtoune was juror on an inquest in Melrose in 1607 (RRM., I, p. 54).
