Haffenden Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Haffenden,' some spot in Kent or Sussex that I cannot discover. The name has existed for many generations at Heathfield in the latter county (v. Lower).

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

The locality does not seem to be known. The gentry family derive from Lawrence Haffenden, of Bugglesden, bailiff of Tenterden, temp. Richard III. This is sufficient proof of the origin of the race among the dens of Kent, even if we did not know that they formerly had lands at Smarden and Halden. See Den. It is worth recording, that a younger and decayed branch of this family, the repreaentative of which branch was lately the keeper of a small country inn at Heathfield, co. Sussex, have, for a series of generations, had right of sepulture in Heathfield church, where numerous gravestones mark their claim to ancient gentry.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

The Haffendens of Heathfield belong to a branch of an old Kentish family of the name; Heathfield has been their home for a series of generations (L.).

User-submitted Reference

There is a Haffenden Quarter in Smarden in Kent. One theory is the name derives from the Norse words hof (church/temple) and den (farm in a clearing in the woods). Another theory is the Saxon for 'harbour', haffen, and den as above. In the Tenterden area where they first appear in the late 13th century was a large shipbuilding industry (nearby Smallhythe was on the shoreline). The landscape changed following the Great Storm to roughly what it is now.
