Most probably from Hailes in the parish of Colinton, Midlothian. There is another Hailes in the parish of Prestonkirk, East Lothian. Magister Wilelmus de Halis witnessed a charter by Roger, bishop elect of St. Andrews, c. 1189—98, relating to the church of Halis, and also witnessed, as de Hales, another charter by the same bishop (RPSA., p. 153; RAA., I, p. 102). John de Halis was abbot of Neubotil in 1398 (LSC., 110), and Daun (= Don) John Hayles, abbot of Balmorenagh (Balmerino) had a safe conduct into England in 1408 (Bain, IV, 744).

A town in Norfolk. Roger de Halys in 19 Henry II. gave a tenement which he possessed in that place to the Abbey of Baungey. From him the Haleses of Woodchurch and Bekesbourne, co. Kent, and of Coventry, baronets, are presumed to have sprung. See Burke's Ext. Barts.
