Hailstone Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Hailstone,' perhaps for Hallystone, a parish in Northumberland.
Johannes de Helistones, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Ricardus de Helistones, 1379: ibid.
1583. Married — Morgaine Hubble and Tomison (Thomasine) Halestone: St. Antholin (London).
Alestan is Athelstan, the ancient personal name. An Alestan was a tenant in chief in co. Hants at the making of Domesday. The surname may, however, be local, either from Hailston, a burn in co. Stirling, famous for its blocks of jasper, or from Ailston-hill near Hereford.
This is hardly the same name as the Hallstein of the Landnamabok; but is more probably from Helston, in Cornwall, which Pryce derives from hal-las-ton, the hill by a green moor.
From Aylestone; a location name in Leicestershire.
