John Hairstanis, senior, burgess of Dumfries, was retoured heir of Matthew Hairstanis of Craigs in lands in the parish of Kirkmahoe, and in the 10 mark lands of Grange in the parish of Ur in 1629 (Retours, Dumfries, 139; Retours, Kirkcudbright, 179). Matthew Herstanes was retoured heir of his father, John Harstanes de Craigs, in 1686 (Retours, Dumfries, 314), and in 1699 William Hairstanes was retoured heir of Matthew Hairstanes de Craigs, his father (ibid., 355). Janet Hairstanes in Cornharrow in 1789 (Kirkcudbright). Of local origin from some small place of the name. There is a Hairstones Height in the parish of Kirkpatrick-Juxta, and a Hairstanes in Linlithgow Retours (237). Harestones in the parish of Kirkurd, Peeblesshire, derives its name from several standing stones near by. By some the name has been changed to Hastings. Hairstens c. 1740.
