A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

William de Hatteley, son of Sir Robert dictus de Hatteley and Matilda his wife, with the consent of his wife Emma, about 1230 granted to the monks of Kelso a right of way through his land of Mellerstan and permission to build a bridge over the Blackburn (Kelso, 136). Another Robert de Hetlye, who possessed lands in Faunes and Melockstan, is probably Robert de Hattely who in 1270 witnessed a charter by William de Alwentum (Alwinton) to the Abbey of Melrose of the lands of Halsinton. John de Hetlyn and Alexander de Hetlye appear in 1292 (Stodart, II), and Alexander de Hateleye rendered homage at Elgyn en Morreve, 1296. His seal beers a boar's head couped, erect to dexter, and S' Alex' de Hateley (Bain, II, p. 183,195, 541). Johan de Hatale of Peeblesshire also rendered homage, 1296 (ibid., p. 207). William de Hetley was one of the men-at-arms in the garrison at Roxburgh Castle in 1335—6—7. William Hatle, Scots merchant, had a safe conduct to travel in England, 1412, and David Hatley, Scottish merchant, the same in 1475 (Bain, IV, 829, 1433). John de Hatele rendered his account of receipts of Strathurde in Perthshire, 1453, and Leonerd Haitlie was portioner of Haliburtoun in 1631 (Inquis., 1827). In a bond of assurance dated April 1568 the Brownfields bind themselves and their servants under the penalty of £1000 Scots, and assure Alexander Hately in Lembden, John in Broomhill, George in Hordlaw, Laerence in Haliburton, and Leonard, brothers, and Patrick Hately in the Kleyis, their children, household, men and servants, that they shall be unharmed and unmolested for three years.
