From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An old Orcadian surname derived from the lands of Halcro in South Ronaldsay, which again were named from Halcro in the parish of Bower, Caithness. The I is an interpolation showing that the preceding vowel is long. A seventeenth-century tradition on record claims that the family were descended from a natural son of King Sverrir of Norway. David Haucrow, tacksman of Qwybrown in Ronaldsay, 1492, appears to be the first of the name recorded (REO., p. 405). The name is not found in Peterkin's Rentals. Sir Nycoll Haucro or Halkraye was parson of Orpher in 1534 and 1539 (ibid., p. 216; Goudie, p. 143), and Hew Halcro of that Ilk is mentioned in 1640 (MCM., II, p. 211). Hacra 1575, Hacro 1528, Hawcro 1548. Hacroe also occurs.
