That the surname existed till the present generation is proved by the fact that several years ago I saw it stated in a newspaper as a curious coincidence that in a northern town two houses, closely adjacent, were occupied, one by Mr. Doubleday, the other by Mr. Halfnight. Unfortunately I did not make a note of it.
