From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of territorial origin from the lands of Haliburton in Berwickshire. Near the end of the twelfth century David filius Tructe (or Truite or Trute) granted the church of his vill of Halyburton "cum tofta et crofta et duabus bouatis terre" to the monks of Kelso (Kelso, 268). About the year 1230 this grant was confirmed by Walter, the son of David, son of Truite, and about 1261. Philip de Halyburton again confirmed the gift of the church of Halyburtun and pertinents to the Abbey of Kelso as formerly made by David filius Trute his proavus and Walter his avus (ibid., 269,270). Sir Henry de Haliburtoune witnessed a grant of lands in Dunypais, c. 1200 (Cambus., 83), and also appears as witness c. 1242—3 in a charter by Matilda, countess of Angus (RAA., I, p. 332). Adam de Haliburtun witnessed a charter by Matilda, countess of Angus (ibid., 49). Philip de Haliburton, c. 1260, son and heir of William de Haliburton, confirmed the grant of Melocstan to the Abbey of Kelso made sometime previously by his uncle (avunculus meus) (Kelso, 137), and also witnessed a charter by Patrick, 3. earl of Dunbar to Coldingham (Raine, 138). Henry de Haliburtoune rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a shield charged with a bend and S' Henrici de Haliburton (Bain, II, 816). In 1300 he witnessed a charter by Adam de Baddeby (Home, 225), and in 1309 was a witness in the enquiry concerning the Templars (Wilkins, p. 382). Ralph de Halibourton, a degenerate traitor, was enlarged from prison in England to be taken to Scotland to help those Scots seeking to capture William Waleys in 1305 (Bain, IV, p. 373). Walter de Halyburtoun appears as a witness in 1362 and 1367 (Egidii, p. 11; CAB., p. 540), Walter Haliburton was one of the hostages for the king of Scotland in 1425 (Bain, IV, 981,983), and Patrick Hallyburton, a native of Scotland, had permission to remain in England in 1466 (ibid., IV, 1367). The Hallyburtons of Pitcur were an old family in Angus and Perth, and another old family were the Halyburtons of Foderance in Angus. Halburton 1364, Haliburntoun 1526, Halliburton 1713, Hallyburtoun 1601, Halyborton 1393, Halybourton 1415, Halyburtoune 1667, Healyburton 1679, Heleburtone 1614, Helibourtone 1650, Helliburton 1698, Hollyburton 1547.
