Halkerstone Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Originally Hawkerton, from lands in the Mearns held by the king's falconer (see under Falconer). Johan de Haukerstone of Edinburghshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears an eagle (rude), S' Joh'd' Havk'tun (Bain, II, p. 203,558). The surname was common in Edinburgh in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The principal access at that time from the city to Trinity College and Hospital was a steep alley known as Halkerston's Wynd so named, it is said, from the builder of Queen's College, John Halkerstoun or Haukirstoun (1462—1463). Others say the wynd was named from David Halkeiston who was killed in 1544 when defending the town against the English (Wilson, Memorials of Edinburgh in the olden time, II, p. 30, ed. 1891). Robert de Halkerston was rector of Cultir, 1468 (Neubotle, 301), and his successor was William Halkerstoune who was presented to the benefice c. 1483 (OPS., I, p. 175), and appears again in 1489 as William Havkerston (REG., 457). Violet Halkartoune in Syde 1581 (Brechin), William Halkerstoun, portioner of Hilcairnie (Inquis., 695), and Jeanna Halkistoune was heir to Mr. David Halkistoune in Anstruther, 1646 (ibid., 3128). The name now shortened to Hackston and Haxton. Hakkerstone 1500 Hallcarstoune 1493.
